NUYS Auditions

This is the Youth Symphony audition page.

NUYS Auditions for the 2018-19 Season are coming up earlier this year!

Reserve Saturday August 25 at Promontory School of Expeditionary Learning, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry Utah, 84302 to come in and audition! Having earlier auditions will give us more time to put the orchestra together and plan the first rehearsal, which will be Saturday September 15, 2018!

The purpose of auditions is to prepare our musicians for the challenges of the music we will be playing during the year. To give every possible opportunity to each prospective musician, we are hosting our first ever Audition Workshop, 5:30 pm, Wednesday, August 8th, 2018. Not only will Mr Dunn address specifics about auditioning for NUYS, he will address the topic of preparing for college or other future audition situations.

(2) Solo:
  • A one minute (or slightly less) excerpt of a prepared solo (*we will probably stop you before you finish*).

(3) Excerpt:

  • We have assigned an excerpt from Schubert's Rosamunde Overture. Accuracy is more important than tempo. (Translation: Play it correctly, then work on playing it faster.) The excerpts specific to your instrument are linked here:
The following video is an example of what you can find on YouTube for this piece, and seems to have good sound and several cameras. Look at that amazing concert hall in Prague! The flute excerpt happens at about 3:42, oboe at about 3:57, Clarinet and Bassoon at about 5:29, and Horns, Trumpets, Trombones, Timpani, and Strings at about 5:47. We recommend you get to know the entire piece and not just the spot you need to learn. (Harp has a different piece altogether!)

We work with musicians who have marching band conflicts as long as they communicate ahead of time about their schedules using the attendance form.
